HORSE RIDING GAMES ” Make Learning Horseback Riding Fun

Horse riding games are often incorporated to horse riding lessons because it provides a lot of advantages to the students. Aside from making studying fun, they keep student riders more enthusiastic. More importantly, horse riding games keep the riders motivated. Therefore, these games make learning easier.

Boot Game

This game can be played either individually or as a team. What you will need, aside from the riders, with their horses, who will play the game, are boots and a muck bucket. The riders will line up at one end of the ring, while the boots will be placed on the rail at the other end of the ring. The muck bucket will be placed at the center of the arena.

If the game will be played individually, all the riders will start at the same time. If the game will be played as a team, the riders in a team will play one after the other.

Step 1. The riders will travel, either trotting or cantering, to where the boots are and get one boot.

Step 2. The riders will go to the place where the muck bucket is placed and try to throw the boot in.

Step 3. The riders must manage to drop the boot inside the bucket, otherwise, they will have to dismount the horse and pick the boot up. They cannot do the next step if they will not be able to drop the boots inside the bucket.

Step 4. The riders will travel back to the end of the ring where they started after dropping in the boot. The first person or team to finish will win. But, if the game is played as a team, the riders in the same team will play one at a time. A rider cannot start until his or her team mate tags him or her.

What the riders will learn with the boot game is not to head the horse directly to the boot they want. Rather, they will learn to ride up along the rail and scoop the boot up. This is because if the horse is facing the boot, they cannot lean over to pick it up.

The riders will also learn to approach the bucket at the walk and to drop the boot in the bucket carefully. This will teach them to be patient, how to plan and how to steer.

Red Light, Green Light

In this game the riders are asked to do what is commanded of them. They will walk the horse in Red Light and trot the horse in Green Light. While trotting or walking, from one side of the arena, they will go to the other side, which is the finish line.

If a rider fails to do the command, he or she will go back 5 steps. The winner will be the one who is able to cross the finish line first.

With this game, riders will develop their skills on body language as well as eye contact. Control and calmness with the horse will also be encouraged.

Horse riding games are very useful to the learning progress of the students. This is why more and more instructors are incorporating them in the lessons.
