Make Your Garden Attractive To Wild Birds

There are a variety of ways to attract the wild birds. The best way is to provide the food they love best and a safe place to eat it. Bird feeders are perfect for providing food for them. They are really helpful to the birds during the winter when food is hard to find.

Feeding stations can be set up with food to attract different species. Examples of speciality feeders include thistle feeders to hold the tiny thistle seeds that finches love. Prevent the seeds from getting moldy by keeping them dry in a tube feeder. Set up a window bird feeder to watch the birds feed from inside your home.

You can purchase bird feeders specially designed for goldfinches, woodpeckers and hummingbirds. Place close to your bird house somewhere safe. Check the food in the bird feeder daily to make sure it is dry and mold free. Spilled food should be cleaned up every day to stop it attracting pests such as wasps and ants.

Food scarcities can occur in other seasons although the winter is the time of greatest danger of starvation for the birds. All through the year put out suitable food to help them if shortages occur. Temporary food shortages that occur in the breeding season can affect the fledglings so you should provide suitable food at this time.

Pans of water or garden bird baths should be provided to give them a safe place to drink, bathe and preen their feathers. Provide water at various levels as some birds will prefer water at ground level, others prefer water in containers above the ground. Containers should only be filled to a few inches and should be placed some way away from the noise around bird feeders. Wild birds will be attracted to the sounds of running water. A water dripper will attract birds to your bird bath and also prevent mosquitoes breeding in it.

A natural environment in a part of the garden will increase the birds sense of security. You can provide an attractive place for them by letting a small area of the garden grow wild.
