There are many kinds of species of this fish. First is the Magoi Koi, one of the first of all black mutations that can grow very long. They may look black when viewed from above, but in reality their color is actually deep bronze. Due to their great possibilities in terms of size, their blood is being reintroduced to other species in order to speed up and maximize the growth potential of the others.

The Karasu Koi (which means "crow" in Japanese) is another one of those very old species. It is distinguished by its black body and fins. They can also have an orange or a white belly.

The Matsukawabake have areas or white on its body. This has the ability to change its color. Due to their environment and diet, their color will vary from duller or brighter shade of color. The temperature of the water or seasons can contribute to the change of their color, turning them to pure black or pure white. It will return to its original color once there's a change in condition.

The Kumonryu is considered as the most popular of the species. It first surfaced in the 1980's. "Kumonryu" means "dragon fish". It's been called as such because its body is reminiscent of those of the dragons represented in ancient paintings. Some may think that these fish look like dragons rising up through the sky. It has the ability to change its pattern and color.
