Dog Health Care: Why Buying a Farmed Puppy is a Bad Idea

Anybody considering bringing home a new puppy should carefully consider where to buy it from. Owners of puppies who have not been purchased from a reputable source are often left to deal with numerous dog health care problems. This is because of the danger of unwittingly buying a puppy who was born in a puppy farm.

Puppy farms and their owners show no regard for dog health care. In fact, farmed puppies are unlikely to be healthy. Such puppies often suffer with grave physical and psychological illness.Farmed puppies are likely to demonstrate behavioural problems.

These problems are down to the conditions in which these puppies are kept.Because puppy farms are just breeding facilities with profit as the only concern, the dogs are kept in poor conditions. They have little space to move around and almost no human contact.

These dogs are also prone to poor health. Mother dogs are malnourished because of the poor quality food they are fed in only the smallest amounts. From four months old, female dogs enter a cycle of constant breeding until they die or become too weak to continue. This frequent breeding leaves both mother and puppies unhealthy. Mothers and puppies are normally separated too soon so that the babies can be sold and she can breed again. All of this and a lack of human contact causes dog health care problems and extreme behavioural disorders.

Puppies in pet shops are usually the product of puppy farms, so it’s not advisable to buy them. It is also difficult to be sure where puppies in internet or newspaper adverts have come from. Therefore, if buying a puppy from an internet or classified advert always insist on seeing the puppies with their siblings and mother as well as the father if possible.Any seller who makes excuses when asked this is not to be trusted. Even if a farmed puppy seems like a cheaper idea, the saving is lost when extra vet bills and heart ache for the owner are considered. Reputable breeders stay well away from puppies from farms, so other dog owners may be able to recommend local breeders.
