Taking Care Of A Pet Rabbit
If you are looking for a friendly and loveable pet there really is no better choice than a rabbit. Many rabbits love human interaction and enjoy being held and stroked. It is important to remember that rabbit care is essential and as with any other pet, a responsible owner will do all in his or her power to ensure their rabbit is healthy.A rabbit is generally an easy pet to care for, but before you adopt one you need to bear several things in mind.
Your new rabbit will need a safe, clean hutch with plenty of bedding for warmth. Make sure you can afford the cost of food and ideally buy a run so it has the opportunity to run around. The hutch will need to have adequate height to allow the rabbit to stand on its back legs. It also needs to be wide enough for the rabbit to hop around. It should also be wide enough to allow the rabbit to hop at least four full hops in any direction.Just like your own home the ideal hutch should be separated into distinct “rooms” with a space to play, eat, and use the toilet. You will need a larger hutch if you have two or more rabbits. As UK nights can be very cold please make sure you provide your rabbit with a quality bedding.Line the hutch with newspaper and cover with dust free chippings and straw. All the bedding should be changed regularly (a great job for the kid’s pocket money!).The location of the hutch is really important and you should make sure it is not placed in an area of direct sunlight, or open to draughts.During daylight hours your rabbit should be free to look outside the hutch. However, at night you need to cover the hutch so the rabbit cannot see predators such as foxes and cats.In addition to your hutch consider buying a run. Rabbits enjoy being allowed to hop around and a run provides them with a protective area in which to do this.
Nutrition is an important consideration when feeding your rabbit and they need to eat digestible and indigestible fibre. This is necessary because food actually passes through a rabbits system twice.Foods like supermarket brand museli can be high in sugar and starch, both of which are not healthy ingredients. Try and avoid buying this food.Search out a specialist rabbit food which contains the two essential fibres and you are giving your rabbit the best chance of a long and happy life.It is easy to find a specialist pet food retailer, either online or on the high street. In addition to specialist food try and give your rabbit treats such as apple, banana, broccoli, celery, tomato, turnip and cabbage.
Pets thrive in a loving home, and by following these simple guidelines you are playing your part in being a responsible pet owner.
